In today’s article, you will join us on a virtual tour from our hotel in Murano Venice to the discovery of the flamingo colony in the Lagoon. Yes, you got it right. Flamingos!
Less than an hour by boat from hectic Venice, a relatively undiscovered wildlife retreat is home to hundreds of fish and bird species. Until recently, seeing pink flamingos in the Venetian Lagoon was unimaginable being these birds typical of the warmer areas of the country. However, in the last few years the Lagoon has become the main attraction for colonies of flamingos that end their winter migration on its muddy salt marshes and waters brimming with crustaceans and microalgae. The area offers the perfect conditions for these animals that seek food, security and space to spend their winter months, in tranquility and peace.
Thus an increased number of flamingos can now be seen year-round off Chioggia town, in the southern Lagoon, Lio Piccolo, Burano and Torcello Islands where hundreds of squawking flamingos hop in and out of the water as they forage for lunch or fly off to dry land like in the picture taken by Marco Contessa (IG allen32foto). It is estimated that in the Venetian territory, the colony has reached 15,000 birds, making the area one of the most densely populated in the Northern Adriatic.
It is no longer rare to see these birds of intensely vibrant beauty that routinely show up as the feathered celebrities of the wild Venice.
Visitors who go on excursion by bike or boat can have an unparalleled opportunity to view in marvel, study and photograph the graceful flamingos. Hence, on your next trip to our hotel in Murano Venice, keep your eyes wide open as the lucky observer maybe you! Until then, enjoy this breathaking video by DAV 4K (YouTube) / IG dav_videomaking.
