The conception of art cities as popular cultural destinations can often obscure the wild places within their reaches and with cities’ abundant buildings, natural habitat remnants may often be difficult to see.
With its uninhabited islets, salt marsh areas and sandy beaches, Venice may appear to be an exception at first glance and it may surprise you to know that little farms, vegetable gardens and even vineyards still exist in the heart of the city. Can you believe that a piece of rural reality is right in the heart of Murano, just a short walk from Hyatt Centric Murano Venice?
Yes, sir! It is Ortobombo, a small business founded by Gioia and Alessio who both worked in the glass factory owned by Gioia’s Family. It was Alessio that during the lockdown period in 2020 became interested in the beekeeping so he attended an online training and once restrictions were lifted he met the beekeepers of the nearby Island of S.Erasmo and learnt all the innermost secrets of bee lives. In the same year, Gioia decided to quit her job and begin her new life as a full-time beekeeper and farmer to earn more peace of mind while getting closer to Mother Earth and their newborn baby. It is on a little plot of land nestled among the little houses of Murano where Gioia and Alessio make sure the bees can pollinate millions of wild flowers in the lagoon, thus ensuring the survival of indigenous plants as well as the preservation of the fragile ecosystem of the area.
“No tract of land is too small for the wilderness idea.“ – Aldo Leopold
These small insects are the fundamental link in the entire food chain. Thanks to their tireless pollination work, bees are responsible for about 80% of the food we eat every day and beekeepers are modern super heroes who cure bees and protect them from diseases, predators and lack of food. The bees teach us that union is always strength. Take two pigeons with one bean: save the planet and support the local community by adopting your hive… a bee-licious opportunity to enjoy your very own 100% Venetian honey at home.
If you want to adopt or want more information, contact Ortobombo here! Your honey jar is just a bee away. It is the perfect gift for the environmentally conscious, the bee or honey lover, or simply the person who seems to have everything!
Choose your adoption pack (cost is per year) and you will receive updates and photos of the adopted hive throughout the year:
